I've been talking to some people about Israel's nuclear weapons program. I always thought it was one of those "legendary" things. Turns out that FAS estimates they have 200 or so nukes -- and even some neutron bombs. More info here and here.
I'm really wondering if the Palestinians should even attempt to start a war. Israel has them way outgunned, and the neighboring states have lost time and again to Israel, and if the Israelis are so provoked they will turn Damascus into a radioactive crater. Even if the Palestinians win they'll never have true independance since they'll just a be a puppet state of Syria.
Seems to me the best solution would be for Arafat to go directly to the US and work out a deal for peace, one that gives them land and restitution for their stolen lands in exchange for a normal Arab relations with Israel and a guarantee of peace. But Arafat is a coward, and there's no way in hell he'd risk his own hide, especially with Hamas awash in Iranian and Syrian money and arms.
