The comment spam problem is growing at a geometric pace. Since I upgraded mt-blacklist six months ago, I've had more than 7,000 comments moderated or denied. Comment spammers now make up about 75% of the hits on this site. It's really getting... annoying.
So, I'm increasing the firepower.
- As mentioned previously, the nofollow plugin is now active.
- I've also added two additional plugins: MT-DSBL and Real Comment Throttle. MT-DSBL will bounce any comment that comes from any server listed as an open proxy on the DSBL. Real Comment Throttle limits the total number of times a day anyone can leave a comment on this here site. Both of these plugins may have some detrimental effects on legit commenters. If so, e-mail me and let me know the trouble. The user name might be wnalyd. You would probably want to send it to gmail. And it's a .com TLD.
- And oh, you should do your best not to mention any pharmaceuticals in any comment you post, trade name or generic. You were able to get it up and/or grow hair on it? Nice. But I don't care to hear about it.

Do explain, why do people use MT? I have 6 blogs on Blogger and have never gotten spammed. No doubt due to their unbelievable popularity... but still... what is so great about MT that people put up with this crap?

Well, I got a free unlimited MT license for being a beta tester....
Both MT and Wordpress suffer from the same problem -- wide-open comment posting. MT does offer centralized accounts and verification, but a lot of people have been skittish of installing it. Blogger forces users to log in or post anonymously.
Wordpress and MT both have significant advantages over Blogger -- no big central DB, plugin capability, multiple templates, categories. I started on Blogger and went to MT, partially because I wanted more customization, partially because I needed a reason to learn PHP and Perl.
Here's a slightly outdated comparison chart of all the different user-installed blog packages: http://www.asymptomatic.net/blogbreakdown.htm

Just to remind you, there's a simple plug-in for MT that forces a random code entry before a comment is accepted, like Yahoo Groups does. I've been spam-free since I put it in, in November I think.
